This is our first Awesome Dogs feature. With this series we’re looking to highlight, well, awesome dogs that cross our paths. What constitutes awesome-ness? Well there are no categories to be graded, no checkboxes that need checking, it’s just an instant feeling you get when you read or hear a story. For us the whole concept for this series of posts came into focus when we first read about a dog named DUG OUT MEYERS (Aka DUG). So let’s meet Dug…
How did we meet Dug?
Well I stumbled upon the CAMP – Technical Adventure Equipment website and somehow found my way to their athletes page. You see CAMP specializes in technical climbing equipment. Their name, CAMP, is actually an acronym for “Concezione Articoli Montagna Premana” which translates to “Conception of Articles for Mountaineering Made in Premana“. The company states that “C.A.M.P. stands for history, innovation, quality and absolute dedication to the mountain lifestyle.”
So where do the athletes fit in? Well the company works closely with their team of athletes “in areas of product design and improvements. If there is one recurring theme with our athletes it is that they are known for pushing the limits in their own unique ways using the light and fast tactics and gear that CAMP is best known for.”
As it turns out Dug is one of the CAMP athletes and his bio is impressive.
Let’s meet Dug.
As described in his bio:
“Dug is.”
It’s clear that his “owners” love Dug. Though it sounds like he’s so great that it’s possibly not so much of an ownership situation here but rather he lets his “owners” come along on his adventures. Dug is clearly an accomplished climber and mountaineer himself.
“Dug routinely meets us high up on multi-pitch routes at belay ledges – places we have no idea how he gets to. He has fallen off the backside of Lizard Head and lived to tell the tale, launched past us sitting on the edge of a 50 foot cliff (in this case we caught him before his cape unfurled and he flew away), and he will take on other dogs of any size or disposition. He is fearless in the way we only wish we could be.”
Dug has an interesting and amusing profile that I encourage you to check out. Here are a couple of highlights:
Inspirations: The bee (Frisbee that is), sticks bigger than me.
Past injuries:
- Lacerated tendon on front left finger
- Multiple puncture wounds from brawls with skunks, foxes, and jealous dogs
- Clostridium difficile and Giardia lamblia survivor
- Missing claws on four digits from excessive fetching
- Recently curing my own cancer
Things I am afraid of: Nothing (except cats and vacuums).
Sounds like Dug is an adventurer through and through. If he happens to cross your path we can only suggest that you step aside, doff your hat and give him a knowing respectful nod and glance as he passes by.
